Former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis capitalized on an endorsement from President Trump to narrowly defeat Tallahassee’s insurgent Democratic Mayor Andrew Gillum, who conceded Tuesday night with just a point separating the candidates and 99 percent of precincts counted.

DeSantis trailed other Republican contenders in the state primary until a June tweet by the president saying DeSantis would make a “great governor” vaulted him into the lead.

DeSantis has said he hopes to build on Florida’s expansive school choice programs and ensure that 80 percent of state education funding goes to classrooms.
